Sport

We believe that the cultivation of a healthy body is an essential part of education.  Sport fosters pride in each participative pupil, a sense of satisfaction and achievement, and a desire to make physical activity an inherent part of pupil’s lifestyle.

Sports facilities include:

1 floodlit synthetic grass pitch
4 floodlit synthetic grass tennis courts
Indoor sports complex
Changing facilities

Other organised activities:

We encourage all pupils to participate in the many sporting activities which are organised and supervised by teachers.  Teachers voluntarily give generously of their time and expertise, far beyond the call of duty.

These organised activities include: hockey, football, camogie and tennis.

Camogie at Sacred Heart Clonakilty

Camogie at Sacred Heart Clonakilty has been and still is an integral part of school life. We field teams at first year, junior and senior level and over the years have been quite successful. The school has won numerous counties at all levels with the highpoint thus far being the All Ireland win at Senior level in 2000. The team was coached by Mr Liam Nash and included players such as current Cork Senior and All Star Jennifer O Leary. The present crop of pupils boast inter county players at levels ranging from U14 to Senior and there dedication marks them out as stars of the future. The school does not cater solely for experienced players but also welcomes those who have limited or no experience.

Hockey

Hockey is a long established sport in the school.  Teams are entered into the munster A and B cup and league competitions.  When students enter the school in first year, all are encouraged to play hockey at lunchtime and be part of the first year team.  This is a development team and friendly matches are played during the year. Junior and Senior B teams also play and train during school time.

Football at Sacred Heart

The Sacred Heart players made their debut in ladies football in 2005. Progress since then has been nothing short of remarkable. In the 05/06 season the school won the Munster Senior 'C' championship before going on to lose to Portmarnock CS in the All-Ireland semi-final by just two points. By virtue of winning the Munster 'C' title, Sacred Heart got promoted to the 'B' grade for the 06/07 season. Through hard work and dedication Sacred Heart, Clonakilty were crowned Pat the Baker All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Ladies Football senior 'B' champions in April of 07 following a thrilling victory over St. Joseph's, Rochfortbridge.  In addition Sacred Heart's junior team also did well in the 06/07 season and were narrowly beaten in the Munster 'B' final by Shannon Community School. In the 08/09 season the senior footballers were narrowly beaten in the County final. Therefore the future certainly looks bright for Sacred Heart on the football fields of Munster and further afield.  Finally sport is very much encouraged in the school and support is always available from both the school management, as well as from the rest of the teaching staff.

Training:

  • Senior and junior panels train together 1 - 2 times per week.
  • First years train on once a week during lunch

New players are always welcome.
