TY Students in Malawi

On October 29th 2016, three transition year students, Maebh McCarthy, Anna McCarthy and Mary Cullinane, from Sacred Heart Secondary School, Clonakilty set off for a life changing trip to rural Malawi with Gorta –Self Help Africa.

In Malawi, the girls visited a local primary school and two rural communities partaking in an agricultural development project implemented by Gorta-Self Help Africa. They attended a reception at the Irish Embassy with the Irish Ambassador to Malawi, Ms. Aine Hearns, where they learned about all the work the Irish Embassy in Malawi does in conjunction with Irish Aid. The girls also visited Mua Cultural Heritage Centre to learn about the customs and heritage of the Chichewa tribes in Malawi. The girls travelled back to Ireland on November 6th.

Mary, Anna and Maebh thoroughly enjoyed this eye-opening trip and are very grateful and appreciative to Mr. Mulcahy, who travelled with the girls to Malawi. They would like to take this opportunity to thank him for all his hard work and encouragement.
