Transition Year Bridge Building Competition

Transition year students at Sacred Heart competed in a bridge building competition last Friday. Over the past few weeks groups have been learning about stresses and tensions on bridges and how various bridge designs such as trusses, suspensions, and supports can help distribute a load from a bridges' centre to its supports at either end. The goal of the competition was to create a free standing bridge 400mm wide with only 70 lollipop sticks and pva glue, to withstand maximum weight before failing. The winning bridge failed at a weight of a whopping 38kg. Well done to all the students involved and to their teachers, Ms Lonergan, Mr O'Sullivan, Mr Kiely and Mr Hanley.
