Sacred Heart invest in ICT to enhance teaching and learning in the classroom
Computers and ICT have played a dominant role in most classes for a long time, however, up to recently, this was primarily by the teacher. The new vision for education focuses on students becoming independent learners and collaborating with one another which could not be achieved simply with one classroom computer. Currently, all teachers have their own Chromebook and 28 student Chromebooks have been purchased. Working within a small group (eg: one computer per 3/4 students) allows students to access educational websites, textbooks and exam questions for independent learning whilst enhancing their teamwork skills. With Classroom Based Assessments (“CBA”s) included in the new Junior Certificate Cycle, further emphasis is placed on the requirement for such technology. As Chromebooks require internet access, a brand new fast and efficient school Wi-Fi system was procured and installed in September 2018.
The Parents Association has contributed €2,000 to date towards the purchase of Chromebooks and have organised a 5km Fun Run & Walk which will take place on Sunday, 7th of April at 11.00 am to raise further funds. All students and teachers have access to a school gmail account, 24/7 access to the cloud storage system G Suite. New data projectors with chromecast facilities have recently been installed which will allow a Chromebook to be cast to any data projector in any classroom using cloud-based access. We have a high spec, sophisticated ICT system which enables and enhances modern teaching methods whilst allowing students autonomy in their learning.
