Mind Set – Skillset – Get Set: Third Years Boost Their Study Skills

A dynamic and engaging study-skills workshop titled “Mind Set – Skillset – Get Set” was recently delivered to our third-year students by Rosemarie Sexton and Donna O’ Regan. The session aimed to equip students with practical tools to support effective learning, exam preparation, and overall well-being.

Throughout the workshop, students explored how to create an effective learning space, minimise distractions, and recognise their individual learning styles. This helped them identify how they learn best and how to adapt study techniques to suit their strengths.

The facilitators introduced key strategies tailored to different learning preferences. This was complemented by a valuable segment on self-care, during which students learned about the HALT model - Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired - as a simple check-in tool to manage stress and maintain balance during study periods.

Students also gained a clearer understanding of how the brain works, with accessible explanations of memory, concentration, and the benefits of regular breaks and movement for productivity. Transition Year students contributed to the session by sharing practical tips and personal insights from their Junior Cycle exam experiences, offering relatable guidance and reassurance to their peers.

To keep energy levels high, students took part in short posture and movement activities, including skipping, to boost focus and engagement. A relaxed break with healthy - and a few not-so-healthy - treats, along with a fun raffle, added an enjoyable and social element to the event.

Overall, the workshop was highly productive and very well received. Students left feeling informed, motivated, and better prepared to approach their studies with confidence and a positive mindset.
