Junior Camogie Team off to an impressive start in County Competition.

Sacred Heart’s Junior Camogie team travelled to Colaisté Mhuire AG, located on the city’s Northside, to play the home team in the opening game of this years Cork Colleges Junior B Camogie. The panel comprises players from Barryroe, Clonakilty, Kilbree, Enniskeane and  Ballinascarthy.

Sacred Heart started strongly, aided by a stiffening breeze and  Hazel Nyhan raised  the white flag from an acute angle in the opening minute. This score was consolidated by an Ailbhe Byerley major on 3 minutes following superb approach play by the hard working Saoirse Gilmore. Gilmore was to add a point of her own a minute later.

This trend continued as the forwards enjoyed plentiful quality possession in front of a dominant midfield pairing of Luisne Deiseach and Aoife Harte. The scores followed, points by Roisin Forristal, Harte, and Byerley (3 from play, 3 from frees). Colaiste Mhuires only score in the first half, a goal,  came after 15 minutes.

Approaching the short whistle Aoife White, Byerley and Harte goaled and when the whistle did sound it was 3-10 to 1-0 in favour of the West Cork Girls.

The second stanza started in a similar fashion to the first with Niamh Doyle, now operating on the edge of the square, poaching 1-2 in the opening 10 minutes. Colaite Mhuire answered with 1-2 of their own as they enjoyed their one and only purple patch of the game.

Normal service was resumed for the final ten minutes with the impressive Megan O Regan, adding two superb points, Aoife Harte and  Andrea Whelton one and a long range Ellen Foley free all keeping the scoreboard operator busy.

This portion of the game was notable for the impressive link play of Matilda O Donovan who was fouled for the afore mentioned free and also placed Eabha Ni Bhuachalla in the clear for a well taken goal.

Forwards often take the balance of the credit but the defence was superb lead by captain Leah Mc Carthy and assisted by Aine Hennessy, Mairead Whelton, Eibhlin Murphy, Meabh Lyons and Aisling Coakley.

An impressive start to the camogie year for the Sacred Heart Girls who face either St Mary’s Midleton or Colaiste na Toirbhirte in the semi final of this competion in 4 weeks time. First up though is the opening round of the Munster College's competion away to Colaiste Mhuire Ennis on Wednesday October 1st.

Final score 5-17 to 2-5
