Exploring Ecology in Action: 5th Year Biology Field Trip to Fota Island
Our 5th Year Biology students recently took their learning beyond the classroom with an exciting and educational trip to Fota Wildlife Park. The visit focused on ecology and habitat studies, giving students a valuable opportunity to apply their scientific knowledge in a real-world setting.
During the trip, students carried out a range of fieldwork activities, measuring key environmental factors such as temperature, soil pH, and moisture levels. These investigations helped them to better understand how different conditions influence the distribution of plants and animals within a habitat.
Working collaboratively in small groups, students developed essential scientific skills, including observation, data collection, and analysis. The hands-on experience allowed them to see first-hand how ecosystems function and the importance of accuracy when conducting ecological studies.
A highlight of the day was a talk from the dedicated staff at Fota Wildlife Park. They shared insights into their conservation work, explaining how they protect endangered species and maintain natural habitats within the park. Students learned about the challenges facing wildlife today and the critical role conservation plays in preserving biodiversity for future generations.
The trip was both enjoyable and highly informative, deepening students’ appreciation for ecology and inspiring many to think about careers in environmental science and conservation.
Well done to all involved for their enthusiasm and engagement throughout the day!
